The original Meare Primary School was built in 1840 and until 1991 provided education for the children of Meare, Westhay and Sharpham in this building, plus a later Victorian addition situated to the rear. The older building, with its Headmaster's house adjoining, was sold for private development and in 1991 children and staff moved into an extended and remodelled school which retained the character of the Victorian school whilst providing modem facilities for the growing number of children.

In 1998 the school renamed itself 'Meare Village Primary School' to reflect its nature and ethos as a school which prides itself on serving its local community. We consider ourselves a small, family school where each and every child is valued as an individual. In September 2000 we were able to welcome the village pre-school onto our site in a purpose-built nursery unit and can now provide a continuous education for children from 3 -11 years.

We currently have 122 children on roll who come from the village of Meare itself and also from the nearby village of Westhay, as well as the hamlets of Stileway and Sharpham. We also have children who travel to us from Glastonbury because their families prefer the environment of a small, rural school.

Most of our families have attended our school, in all its forms, for generations. Others have recently entered the area, drawn by the attraction of the beautiful surroundings and sense of real community. Parents always comment on the warm and friendly atmosphere in the school and our children respond by being very caring towards each other.

Our school curriculum is broad and balanced and built upon a strong emphasis on each child's personal and social development. Our Aims and Values were developed by staff, governors, parents and children to reflect the way we behave. There is a strong emphasis on the core subjects of literacy, numeracy and science, but also an enthusiasm for extending the children's experiences beyond the school. There are many visitors to the school and extensive use is made of our rich local environment.
